FAQ
Q: When will I be able to theme other parts of Mozilla or Netscape 6?
A: Chameleon 0.02, the most current stable release, allows you to theme all of the components of the browser except for the Sidebar and the scroll bars. There are plans to include themeing for all of Mail/News and for AIM in the near future and the possibilty of themeing even more as development continues. Continue checking the nightly builds to see the progress in this area.
Q: What is the difference between Chameleon and the Theme Builder?
A: Chameleon is the open source version of Netscape's Theme Builder. The relationship is very similar to the difference between Mozilla and Netscape 6. Information about Chameleon can be found on this site. More information about the Theme Builder and themes in general can be found at Netscape's Theme Park.
If you do not get a response to a question posted in this forum, please try sending a message to the project's mailing list or to the project owner directly.

It sure seems tough to change the width of the toolbar. Is this possible with Chameleon? (nice FAQ question, neh?)

Max Width works for me.

I was unable to install chameleon into Netscape 6. I having difficulty registering a new theme into Netscape 6 and was hoping to use the theme builder to help me out with this problem.

When you go to this page,
http://chameleon.mozdev.org/installation.html
click on the NIGHTLY BUILD link.
You should see a dialog that says `Items to Install'. Click on OK. Then you should see a Downloading dialog. After that disapears, quit out of Netscape. Make sure you quit and not close. Start Netscape again and go to the Tasks menu. At the bottom there should be a menuitem that says Chameleon. Click on it and that should launch Chameleon.
If that doesn't work, check you're preferences in Netscape and make sure you have javascript enabled. If you don't, chameleon will not install.

I installed the stable release version 0.02 and after selecting Finish install then clicking the window that pops up, Chameleon opens with the modern theme loaded, in spite of Mozilla .8 having the Classic theme applied. Load does not work in chameleon. I just want to create a theme that looks like Netscape 4.7x or better yet Netscape 3.0x. Having the nav buttons on the location bar is stupid, having the Home button on the personal toolbar is dumber yet, and not allowing (easily) the removal of nav button icons is even worse. I expected Netscape 6 and Mozilla to IMPROVE upon older versions, not be worse and still have many of the same bugs that have been in Navigator since 2.0!

I went an uninstalled 0.02 of chameleon then installed the latest version, following the instructions on the site of course. Load still doesn't work. Does anyone other than me want to lock up the Netscape and Mozilla programmers in a room and not let them out until they fix all the VERY OLD bugs? ;) Fix 4.7x first, then they can play with 6. :P Netcape 6 and Mozilla still have the same old "phantom process" bug where clicking on links suddenly stops working then when you close all the windows Task Manager still shows a netscape or mozilla task. Netscape 6 and Mozilla are worse at it, they also ignore right mouse button clicks when it happens. But Netscape 6 is a bit worse than Mozilla on this bug, it also stops 4.7x from working until the computer is rebooted. I expected this bug to be gone, not made horribly worse!

I wouldn't recomment using 0.02. Use the NIGHTLY 0.02b. This is far more stable.
I will be testing this week any problems from using 0.02 the 0.02b.
I will also be cutting a release branch for 0.02b.
Thanks

As far as default skins are concerned modern is the starting point.
Eventually, we will be able to import themes and edit them. This is a ver important feature request. We are just taking things one step at a time. ;-)

Sorry about my obscure comment above. My problem is that I want to have a thinner toolbar than the modern theme provides; eg its height would be less, not its width (as I mistakenly wrote).
I went through every little box I could find on the toolbar, and deleted and/or changed all heights to what I wanted, and still couldn't get it to shrink. :(
Maybe I missed something, but I doubt it... If we were able to simultanously edit the source code, that might help. Or maybe it's something set by a parent of the file I'm changing, and so I don't have access to it.
Anyway, that is what I meant to say. And thanks for the reply!

I'm interested in shrinking that toolbar height also. Is there any way to eliminate the graphics and just have text for navigation? What about customizing those oversized status bars at the bottom?? What happened to having just the status with docked component bar on the same bar???

the toolbar can certianly be shrinked you just need to play around. Try selecting 'nav-bar' from the id list and play with the max-height and min-height in the size tab.

Does chameleon work on the current mozilla nightlies (after the XUL changes) or has there an adapted version to come yet?

Oh, ok, it says on the installation page that cahmeleon *is* horked on current builds. Then I change my question: When do you plan to build nightlies which run on current builds?

I have Mozilla .8.1 with Java enabled. I tried to install the nightly build of Chameleon. I installed it and restarted Mozilla. When I started Chameleon, all the objects and labels on the right were misaligned, so badly I could not read them. I also tried installing the version for Mozilla .6, but that didn't work at all. I installed Chameleon for M18 and got the same problem with misaligned objects on the screen.

I installed the stable version .2b on Mozilla 0.0.9 for OS2 Warp ... It appeared to install properly but after ending Mozilla and then restarting the Menu choice for Chameleon on the Tasks menu is blank ... There's nothing by empty gray space ...
When I click on it Chameleon loads but it's weird not having the actual text label on the menu ... Plus I have to wonder if it's actually installed properly ...
Shouldn't there be a cascading Menu for Chameleon ??? Since I don't have one, how to I uninstall it to retry ???
Thanks for the REALLY cool tool !!!

Uhm, I would say you're rather using 0.9 than 0.0.9... Chameleon doesn't work on the newer versions of Mozilla yet (that's what the word 'horked' on the installation page means, couldn't find it in a dictionary). This is due to XUL-changes in Mozilla. I'm eagerly awaiting the adapted version of Chameleon...
About uninstalling: I think you should find a directory with all the Chameleon stuff somewhere in your mozilla directory. Remove it (hope this is still true..).

Just a note. I haven't had time to work onChameleon for a while now. Sorry. I will try to get it going with the current builds of mozilla as soon as i can.
Thanks

That can certainly be done however, development on the theme builder has been halted for the time being.

i've extracted the classic.jar and have been trying to eliminate the back, forward, reload, stop & print icons so that i just have text. i've gotton rid of the icons but the toolbar has not resized itself to just text height, where is the location of setting this height in the skin dir? ( some .css file i'm guessing, but i haven't found it yet) thanks.

yea, Chameleon is on definite hold until after mozilla 1.0 is realeased.
No sense in doing a rewrite until we get to that point.

Ok, ok, I ignored what it said on the installation page and installed chameleon on the most recent version of Mozilla around - I just wanted to see if it just might work. Anyway, it doesn't and I can't uninstall it! Isn't there any other way than choosing uninstall from the Chameleon file menu and uninstalling mozilla completely ?
- [31] Submitted by: Pete Collins on Sunday June 2nd 2002

Ok, what you need to do is manually edit the file.
overlayinfo/communicator/content/overlays.rdf
and remove the reference to theme_builder there.
Then you should be good.

I installed Chameleon .03 into Moz 1.0. All I got was a splash screen. So I uninstalled using the Uninstall tab from Mozilla Tools Menu.
There is a persistant Chameleon listing in the Edit Pref Appearaces Themes window. How do I remove the listing? Is there a manual uninstall FAQ? Thanks. Brian

Brian, read the post right above yours. It tells you how to manually remove the entry from the menubar.

No, This will *not* work on any current builds NS7 or Mozilla 1.X.
There are no current resources other than documentation on these technologies.
